Cowboy Action Stages

Some folks like a story with there stage. I’m kind of the opposite, I just like the facts. Do what you think your shooters will like best.

Here are some tips to help you build the perfect stage.

  • Be very clear about the facts.

  • Stage number

  • Bay number

  • Pistol round count

  • Rifle round count

  • Shotgun round count

  • Where the firearms are staged?

  • Where your hands go?

  • What position you start at?

  • What is the gun order?

  • Your starting line?

  • Try to keep the lines short.

Other things to keep in mind...

  • Images of targets and positions are a great visual help. However, pictures of the actual stage is a waste of ink when printing and does not add much content for the shooters.  After all, you should be standing in front of the stage when you are reading it to the posse.

  • List the firearm instructions in the order they will be shot.

  • Try to always use the same sweeps on rifle and pistol targets. It might sound cool on paper but more senior members tend to have a hard time remembering more than one sweep.

  • Splitting pistol or shotgun?  Be very clear.

  • I prefer to use the name of the sweeps in the instructions, then list the details of the sweeps at the bottom of the page.

  • If using bonuses make sure to add it to the round count. Also, is the bonus(es) optional or required?
